Want your kids to do well in school?

Don’t tell them how smart they are! Say wha!? Psychologist Carol Dweck says that kids who are told how smart they are tend to want to receive praise about doing well and so give up when they get to a challenge they don’t know how to complete, assuming that their innate intelligence is simply not up to the task. Rather, she writes, praise your kids’ effort that resulted in a good outcome. Then when they come to an obstacle they don’t know how to complete, they are more likely to try and overcome it than give up.
