New look

Big changes! Obviously, there’s a new look for the site. I’ve been looking for a different way of organising the material here for a while, and a magazine-style layout appealed to me for the visual nature of the layout. This will also become home base to the whole site because, let’s face it – this is the part most people were visiting anyway.

The gallery site will continue on in its present form, but everything that’s somewhere else on the site right now will be incorporated into this page, from the links up top. This also means that you’ll be able to get at this page from from now on, without having to append the /blog/ part, although that should still come to this page (don’t want to break the permalinks).

Behind the scenes, everything is now organised into categories, denoted by the tabs on the front page (or the sections tab on the right). If a post is not assigned a category when it’s written, it will get assigned automatically to “Uncategorized” which means it won’t show up on the front page. Therefore, if you’re writing a post, make sure you check at least one of the categories to the right of the post-writing page.

Hopefully, this will allow for people to find the kind of stories they want to read quicker, and perhaps to check out areas they wouldn’t normally bother with. I’d love to hear what you have to say about the new look, so fire away in the comments below!

Love the new look and layout. Would like to know more about the underpinnings…

What do you mean by underpinnings? It’s still running on WordPress, since I changed web hosts. The new layout uses the “Categories” feature to organise the content into discrete sections.

Also, there is a feature article ability, which will allow me to put front and center posts which seem particularly valuable, and which will stay there until replaced by another feature article.

The layout is what’s called “magazine-style”. There are a number of them out there, but most of them are paid (from $25-$700), but I’m cheap, so I looked for free ones. This is the best of the free ones for an already established blog. There’s another theme called “Mimbo” I might have considered if I was starting with a fresh blog, but it requires using a bunch of optional features, so I’d have to go back and re-edit each of the old posts individually to make it work. This one just requires that I go back and add a category to each post, which is enough work with nearly 2,000 posts, but I’ve got a batch categorization plugin to do some of the heavy lifting. Over the next few weeks, all the old posts will get slotted into one or more of the new categories (listed as “Sections” on the right sidebar).

Cool – I like it quite a bit.
