So I’ll be the first to admit that because of my wide variety of classes taught, my marking has been somewhat schizophrenic.  I don’t generally mark the same way in CPT as I do in History, French or Science, and each class lends itself to specific ways of gathering marks.  Readers will note that I [...]

Weird crossover moments

You know when you watch a movie and you see an actor and you know you’ve seen him in something recently, but you just can’t put your finger on it?  That happens to me a lot… partly because I watch a ton of movies, partly because my memory is shoddy.  So anyways, Mandi and I were watching Bridget Jones’ Diary (I know, and in my defense, I was going to leave in a few minutes to go play poker, so Mandi picked the movie… also, I’d apparently left my testicles in my other pants) and we’d already identified one of the actresses as Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter, but one of the other friends was bugging me with his familiarity.  Being the laptop equipped nerd that I am, I opened IMDB to discover that it was none other than Gaius Baltar from BSG.  So now I’ve got this weird little English universe in my head where Harry Potter meets Battlestar Galactica… kind of explains the mid-season BSG cliffhanger, I’m thinking.

There’s a phenomenon described by Bill Simmons on ESPN about that kind of thing. He calls it the “That Guy” thing. You know, where you’re watching a movie or TV show, and you recognize one of the actors/actresses, and you say “Hey, it’s that guy, from that movie.” Then it bugs you forever, until you remember it at 2 in the morning. It’s fun to keep track of “That Guys.”
