My grandmother has never been a big woman, but she never looked smaller than when she laid my grandfather to rest this Monday. My grandfather, on the other hand, was a big man. Not in his stature, to be sure, but his presence would easily fill a room.
My grandfather was the kind of person who [...]

Now, I’m not a movie critic. I don’t like movies where it’s just two people in a room talking for one and a half hours about their feelings and/or relationships. I’m not into period dramas or classic literature. You won’t find me at classic movie revival festivals.
Those kinds of people who do enjoy the aforementioned will probably not find much to like about Transformers 2. I, on the other hand, loved it! It’s pretty much the perfect summer blockbuster. Let’s see: massive slow-motion explosions? Check. Straightforward plot? Check. Comedic interludes? Check. Improbably hot female co-star? Double check! Possible spoilers follow…
Michael Bay continues his ’splodey streak from such movies as The Rock, Bad Boys and The Island. The action is bigger than the first movie, and as with all sequels, the film makers skipped right to the story, having taken care of the setup in their previous outing.
The film picks up two years after the end of the first Transformers film. Optimus Prime and the Autobots are co-operating with the American military to root out the remaining Decepticons on Earth, Sam Witwicky is headed off to college while his girlfriend Mikaela stays behind, and Starscream has returned to Cybertron to grow more Decepticons to fight the Autobots.
Apparently, more Transformers can’t be created because of a lack of energon, the substance that made up the Allspark from the first movie. Entirely coincidentally, it turns out there may be a source of energon left on Earth, and Sam might know where it is, thanks to knowledge transferred into his mind via the previously-mentioned Allspark. Cue the chase scenes, battle scenes, frantic searching scenes and so on.
Bay’s trademark directing style of frantic cuts, shaky cam and massive explosions is in full effect here. The robot fighting scenes, with the exception of the first one in Shanghai, are bigger, longer and more well-defined than those of the first film, including a visually engaging sequence in a forest, a juxtaposition of machine and nature that was lacking from the first movie’s dry desert and claustrophobic street fighting.
The story proceeds apace, interspersed with the set action pieces. While the movie clocks in at 2½ hours, the only time I looked at my watch was to see if I could make it to the end without having to go to the bathroom. There’s enough comedy and exposition between the action sequences to keep the movie going and it never feels like it’s bogged down.
All of the Transformers from the first movie make an appearance (the exception being Jazz, who was killed in the finale of the previous film) alongside a number of new robots on both sides. Some of the newcomers mesh quite well with the previously established characters, but some feel slightly tacked-on (as do a couple of the human characters).
During the final battle of the film, it was occasionally difficult to tell which machines were on which side, as they didn’t always show the eyes (Autobots have blue eyes, Decepticons have red eyes). That aside, the expanded cast (both man and machine) works quite well to drive the story forward.
I fully admit to being the target demographic for Bay’s films, and own most of his films. I fully intend to add this one to my collection when it’s available on DVD. I give it four explosions out of five.
I’m just checking to see if the old way of posting still works in the new format.
I took a closer look than usual at my weed whacker today as I completed some yard work, and noticed the following labels on it:
They’re a fairly wierd collection of ideographs. Some of them are evident, and others need a little interpretation. With that in mind, I set out to uncover what it was that [...]
Thought you ought to know… the blog’s anniversary is coming up mid-June, but we pass another landmark today – 2,000 posts! Yay us! Also, we have passed the 2,000 comment mark (we actually would have crossed a long while back if I had been able to import the comments from the 1st incarnation of the [...]
It’s not like they had a choice – their ruling was limited to whether Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage, constituted an amendment or a revision to the state’s constitution. If it was a revision, it would require more legislative steps before being enshrined in the constitution. The court ruled that it was an amendment, [...]
No, that’s not a come-on for a new “enhancement product,” it’s the biggest difference between my new netbook and my previous one. The screen on my new Asus EeePC 900HA is 8.9″ corner to corner vs. my old 701’s seven diagonal inches. You wouldn’t think that 2 extra inches would make that much difference, but [...]
So I had this idea, and I’m not sure if it’s crazy, or “so crazy it just might work”. Anyways. I know a couple other teachers who will have sections of CPT (Communications Production Technology) in the fall, and we’d briefly mentioned trying to pull together some kind of collaborative project that all our students [...]
Terra Insegura is Edward Willett’s sequel to Marseguro, the novel which introduced us to Richard Hansen and Emily Wood, protagonists of this story. As a sequel, the book definitely jumps into the middle of the action – while Willett does an admirable job of bringing the reader up to speed with the events of the [...]
CBC says the liberals have won in BC again. That’s good news, I’m surprised they could win a third straight in this environment.
May has long contained Career Day at our high school. In the past, that meant having a number of local organisations come in to do hallway booth set ups that disinterested students would pass by without a second glance. This year, the guidance office decided to run it slightly differently. Every teacher in the building [...]
Mandi and I had a good laugh recently on the subject of hobbies – she’s recently taken up running, and not in an “I occasionally break into a jog while I walk the dog” running, but in an “I’ve spent over $350 on running clothes and shoes, and I just bought a bike for when [...]
So originally, I stopped posting my Diigo links because it was the only thing going up here, but now the blog’s looking pretty bare. I already send out a weekly e-mail to the techers in my building with the best links I’ve come across during the week, so I thought I’d throw them up here [...]
A Quebec dad has now been slapped down twice by courts in that province for attempting to impose some discipline on his daughter. In the first instance, his 12-yr-old daughter sued him (!) for grounding her from a Grade 6 graduation trip on the grounds that she’s been posting inappropriate pictures to website which he’d [...]
